Biography of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet
Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet was a French preacher and bishop.
He was born on September 27, 1627 in Dijon. He completed his education at the Jesuit school in his hometown, and then, at the age of 15, he went to Paris to study philosophy and theology at the Collège de Navarre. In 1652, he obtained a doctorate in theology.
In 1661, Louis XIV appointed him as a preacher at the Chapelle Royale, where Bossuet delivered some of his best sermons and famous funeral orations.
Bishop Bossuet's writings advocate for absolute monarchy, asserting the divine right of kings and the sacred nature of royal authority.In 1671, he was entrusted with the education of the Dauphin (the heir to the French throne). In 1681, he became the bishop of Meaux and dedicated the rest of his life to defending the Catholic religion. Bossuet passed away in Paris on April 12, 1704.
